I play bass! In a Band!

Gonna be playing bass for Bouts on Saturday at Hard Working Class Heroes Festival. It's been years (approximately ten) since I played a gig with a band and then all I did was be the singer. Any gigs I've played in the last few years have seen me huddled behind a computer, pushing buttons, twisting knobs, looking brain-addled and playing occasional instruments, trying to represent the products of my studio tinkering. This time I am coming into a project where the songs are written and I get to concentrate solely on laying down the 'phat groove' with my rhythm section partner-in-crime and full-time-next-eldest brother, Daniel. Tis going to be very exciting.

We're playing Twisted Pepper, 9.10 - 9.40, Saturday, 9 October. Please do come along if you're around for the festival.

Recently completed my new portfolio site. I had done a little bit web stuff in DCU but wasn't really all that interested in it at the time, plus that was about seven years ago, so I was pretty much starting from scratch with this one and consequently there was a fair bit of time-consuming trial and error as I was putting it together. It incorporates a blog as well, which I intend to use as a design notebook, containing examples of interesting work from around the place as well as my own stuff. Haven't decided yet if I will still post design stuff on this blog. I like how this blog has contained any and all of my creative endeavours but perhaps a segregation between the music and design stuff would make sense.

My friend Oisin has just released an iPhone/iPod Touch app called My Artists. It hooks up your iTunes library with all the info, photos and discovery options of Last.FM, as well as offering very clever youtube playlists of songs that you don't have, to create a greatly enhanced music browsing experience. The more time I spend with it the more I like it. It reminds me of the long ago times when you would buy a CD and then come home listen to the music and look at the cover/read the lyrics and notes, except now you're hooked up with the infinite information-delivering power of The Internet. It gives a bit of personality back to your collection, allowing you to make a bit more of a connection between artists and their music and this is a very good thing.

Anatomy of a screen-print

I recently completed a beginners screen-printing course in Black Church Print Studio (I also talked about it here.) Really enjoyed it, was great to get hands dirty with a tactile, analogue process with all its lovely organic imperfections. Below is the final print that I completed shown at various stages of the process. This print would form the central element for some artwork I am doing for Bouts (mentioned here).

Day 516

Old friend of mine Oisin Prendiville yesterday completed the epic undertaking of Day 516, a photoblog where he uploaded a photo every day for 516 days as he travelled from New York to Buenos Aires (he is currently in Equador). Following him and the lovely Catherine has been great, with the shifting exotic backdrops that accompany their travels and the high standard of aesthetic execution in the shots themselves.

It is a bit strange to think the project is now finished as, since the blog has been going ever since he left Ireland, all of us back home have been in constant contact with them and kept up-to-date on their adventures through the blog. Now it feels like they've really left!

Note: 516 was the number of the house that Oisin, myself, Michael and Fergal lived in on Collins Avenue a few years ago. Read Oisin's entry on this here. Further note: my brother, Daniel, has lived in the house ever since and only moved out last month, so the house is no longer in the family and this blogging monument to it is also finished.

This evening I just completed week three (half-way point) of a screen-printing course I am taking at Black Church Print Studios in Temple Bar. Am really enjoying it so far, love the craft element, working on an actual physical process makes such a nice change from pointing and clicking all day. Having said that, one aspect of it that I think is interesting is how digital skills can come into play in the preparation of the original image that is then transferred to screen for printing, creating a nice symbiosis between analogue and digital processes. Means you can have your cake and scan it in, mess about with it in Photoshop, chemically transfer it onto silkscreen and print it on nice paper with rich inks. Or eat it or something.

Example of Franz Kline stuff I'm faffin' on about

Went to Vertical Thoughts: Morton Feldman and the Visual Arts in IMMA. Great exhibition, does a great job of sketching the relationships between the compositional devices of Feldman and the aesthetic concepts of the New York School (comprised of artists such as Rothko, Guston, Johns, Pollock and Kline). In particular the Franz Kline stuff left a big impression on me, with a high-contrast tonal starkness that served to emphasis the textural richness. Great to see some of Feldman's hand-written manuscripts as well.

Going to the Crash Ensemble performance of Rothko Chapel and Words & Music that is being organised to tie in with the exhibition. Really looking forward to it. Details here.

The Rest Is Noise

Just finished 'The Rest Is Noise' last night. Got it for Christmas and due to my very erratic reading schedule, ie little and infrequently, it has taken me this long to get through it. But it is brilliant. As someone who was briefly introduced to contemporary classical music at college I had an idea that there was a whole world of brilliant stuff that I knew I would love if someone could give the context needed to act as a springboard into this foreign world. This book does that. The way the author manages to draw connections between composers and movements in a way that arch-modernist Austrian serialist madness can be related to far-out minimalist shamenism is fairly mind-blowing, imbuing the music with a tangible sense of accessibility. Anyway, thanks to this book I am now well into Ligeti, Messiaen, Lutosławski, Stravinsky and Feldman, as well as loving the likes of Reich, Mingus, Pärt and the Velvet Underground even more. Read this book if you're interested in classical music but are daunted by the idea of tackling the vastness of the material out there.

One from the archives. Wrote it for a composition assignment/film score about 2 1/2 yrs ago. Features prepared guitar and a real life girl that I recorded and who's name I can now not remember, which is bad form on my part.

This piece has a very pretentious concept that I came up with about a half hour before I submitted it for assessment related to Tibetan beliefs about transitional states. Total bullshit but also weirdly appropriate.

Bit late with this as it finishes tomorrow but NCAD MFA & MA students have a show on in two locations above and beside the Chinese market on Smithfield Square. Michael Higgins has used a piece of my music noise for the video element of his installation (video above). While the video stands on it's own it really is given an extra dimension by the surrounding context that Michael has provided for it at the exhibition space. Lots of other interesting bits and pieces spread around the sprawling space, well worth checking out.

We're planning on launching a series on the SSTN site about different approaches to guitar playing, both in terms of compositional approach and differing methods of extracting sound using extended playing techniques or effects processing.

This reminded me of a piece I wrote while studying in Trinity so I dug it out for some bloggy goodness.

Below are a few wee extracts from the spiel I had to write for it (leaving out, hopefully, the more boring technical aspects).

In order to generate the material for my piece I used a process similar to that used in Terry Riley’s ‘In C’. I wrote a number of different figures that were to be played together. However, it was of no importance that they were played in sequence. I wrote two sections, and within each section there was a number of parts which the performers were allowed to choose, at their own disgression, which of them to play and for how long to repeat each one. They were also encouraged to stop playing if they wanted, as long as it was for the duration of a phrase, or a multiple of that duration, so that they would still be in sync when they came back in. The only restriction to what they played was that they had to fill up approximately two minutes of time. Therefore, similar to ‘In C’ there is an element of improvisation, but it is improvisation within a pre-defined framework of pre-written parts. Each of the the players performed their part in isolation to each other, never hearing what anyone else was playing. The only sound available to the guitarist was a steady simple 4/4 beat played with a kick, snare and high-hat combination, which I later removed.

I edited their parts so that there was more of a linear build in the dynamic in section one, going more or less from quiet to loud. However, section two was left exactly as performed by the players with no rearrangement by me in post-production. This section has a much more constant pulse and therefore lent itself quite easily to the nature of the collaborative playing of the players.

In post-production I also added in some percussion parts. The original source sounds were obtained by recording myself striking the body of the guitar and scraping or plucking muted strings.

I collaborated with the players regarding the ‘sound’ of the guitar. I encouraged them to be adventurous with the different types of sound manipulation they had at their disposal through their selection of pedals and the capabilities of tonal adjustment on their guitars. If I thought it was wildly not in keeping with the tone of the piece I would tell them, or else we would just go with it.

While there is a lot of interesting and useful information on sites such as Smashing Magazine and Noupe, lately I've come to the conclusion that you can't beat the personal blogs of professional designers who, aswell as being adept at their profession, are also able to write articulately on the subject with insight and passion. The single voice of these blogs provides a distinctive tone that lends itself to a more personal relationship with the readership and consequently, for me, makes them much more enjoyable to read.

These incredible Retrographs were created by Segei Larenkov. They juxtapose images from the Siege of Leningrad against the modern day city.

The site that posted these images How to be a Retronaut is fast becoming one of my favourite places at the moment, check out Beautiful colour shots of the streets of Dublin 50 years ago... and Rare 1903 film of London's streets... for example. I'd advise not visiting the site unless you're prepared to be there awhile, many, many interesting things to see.

I recently designed the album cover artwork for Ed Devane's 'Molten Membrane'. Got some copies in the house today, pretty happy with how it came out. Album launch gig is this Saturday in Kennedy's. Free copy of the album included in the cover charge of €10. Ed's set promises to be huge & I am also really looking forward to checking out Kachanski's first live venture in awhile. With further support from quality DJs Eomac, Noid the Droid and Thatboytim it should be a good one. More details here.

Dublin Exhibitions

Myself and Melissa went to the new Francis Bacon exhibit 'A Terrible Beauty' at the Hugh Lane Gallery during the week. Fantastically well-assembled collection, providing a real insight into his methodology and inspirations as well as showcasing some outstanding examples of his work. This is in addition to the already fascinating permanent collection that includes an exact recreation of his chaotic Reece Mews Studio where he painted for the last thirty years of his life. Highly recommended, will be going back myself as we ended up rushing around it a little and there is alot to take in.

We also went to the 'Picturing New York' exhibition at IMMA. This was enjoyable with lots of interesting monochrome photography mostly from 1930s-1960s. Not awe-inspiring in the way that I found the Francis Bacon but then I'm sure that's not really something that it would claim to aspire to. Very pleasant though and definitely had me wanting to book a flight..

'Going West' is a stop-motion film that features some of the most stunning animation I have ever seen. It was produced by Colenso BBDO and animated by Andersen M Studio. It was created for the New Zealand book council, a non-profit organization that promotes writers and artists from the country.

Here is my set from the SSTN event at DEAF. Played and recorded 25th October in Filmbase. Was a pretty epic couple of weeks preparation as the run up to the gig coincided nicely with me finishing up my fulltime job so for once I had a bit of time on my side. Playing with someone for the first time was great craic aswell, Melissa was on the money, unlike my mouse which hopped around the makeshift table so much with the bass rumble that it was unusable. Lucky I didn't need it THAT much cause I had my trusty MIDI assignments sorted. Overall pretty happy with the set, definitely the most fun I've had playing a gig, great atmosphere in the place, with a lovely crowd and the stage set-up looking slick. Fair play to the lads for sorting that actually, as I took a strictly hands off approach to stage & technical management of the gig (I did do the flyers tho). A few little annoyances about various elements in the mix but sure you'll have that. I'm not pointing them out in the hopes that nobody else notices.

A film that I created as part of my thesis for the Music and Media M.Phil in Trinity. This is the full presentation utilizing relief projection.

Blurb repeat:

Threshold is a 3D animation presented using multi-planar projection showing three screens of concurrent action, aswell as relief projection on structures on either side of the stage showing ancillary imagery. It uses an analysis of comparative mythology as a conceptual framework for creating a narrative structure that draws from the store of archetypal images and motifs provided by myth, which are then realized using the fluid aesthetic possibilities of digital animation. Just want to draw attention to two things on the Second Square To None site.

Firstly, the Ten Second Rule Pieces are online (which I contributed a piece to) here and I thoroughly recommend checking them out. We were fortunate to get lots of great material from the finest producers in the country. Lots of diversity and different approaches so am looking forward to seeing what Dubreak, Browncloud, Fyodor, PushMoveClick and Vince MacMahon do with them at the gig next Sunday.

Also, there is a liveset up on the blog by Shane McKenna, a fellow Monaghan person, and it is really worth checking out (well, all the Monday downloads are but I can't be saying it every week!). Beautifully edited orchestral compositions, culled from extensive recordings of the National Youth Orchestra, mixed with a fine underpinning of rhythmic motion. Reminds me somewhat of the Amon Tobin album 'Foley Room', where he used, amongst other things, recordings of the Kronos Quartet.

Meanwhile, I am working away on my set for next Sunday. It's going quite well but there is still alot left to do. Will have loads of new music done by the time it is finished, which I am looking forward to putting out into the world.

I've put together an online portfolio for the purposes of job-hunting. I used carbonmade.com to present it, which I am quite a fan of. It has a nice, clean and elegant layout that focuses on the work. However, the 'notes' section on each project is a little too restrained for my liking, you'd never know there was a button there at all!

This weekend my film 'Threshold' is showing as part of the Darklight festival. It's showing in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield all day today & tomorrow on Level -3 (same level as screens 1 & 2).

In case any of you missed it before, here's the blurb:

Threshold is a 3D animation presented using multi-planar projection showing three screens of concurrent action, aswell as relief projection on structures on either side of the stage showing ancillary imagery. It uses an analysis of comparative mythology as a conceptual framework for creating a narrative structure that draws from the store of archetypal images and motifs provided by myth, which are then realized using the fluid aesthetic possibilities of digital animation. Playhouse Animation

An animation I submitted has been excepted to be shown on Playhouse tonight, huzzah! It'll be on between 10 and 11 tonight. Check my submission/vote for me here.

If you haven't heard anything about it:

From the 24th of September until the 11th of October 2009, the iconic Liberty Hall building in Dublin’s city centre will be transformed into a giant 50 metre, low resolution, TV screen. Members of the public are invited to create animations with sound and music, via our website, and broadcast them across the city’s skyline.
Powering the display are 100,000 low-energy LED lights, installed into 330 windows on the south and west faces of the building. These lights can illuminate each window as a solid colour turning it into a tiny pixel that’s part of a giant display.

Check out playhouse.daft.ie for live feed and further info. Also, join this Facebook group that is trying to make it a permanent installation. It's a great project that has given the city a bit of a positive buzz when we really needed it!

I've always loved heavy music, grunge got me through most of the 90s and introduced me to other sort-of-metal bands such as Deftones, Tool, System of a Down etc. Then the 00s hit and I was off to college. Gradually I got more into electronic stuff but I still retained a strong inclination towards music that was sonically dark and aggressive. It is interesting to me that there seems to be a bit of a trend lately to hear electronic producers that have taken a background in listening to metal and used it to colour their productions without it seeming like a cheesy parody (ie such as Distance, not ridiculous breakcore producers who mash in thrash metal over double time breakbeats). This mix is an attempt to make connections between the worlds of post-hardcore and metal, and electronic music. It is also me just stringing together some of my favourite tunes for turning up real loud and moshing when nobody is looking. Admittedly, it's not for everyone.

Wrote & recorded this yesterday. It was a pain. As I've been recording these I had decided that I wouldn't do any comping of takes, because they don't have to be perfect & cause I thought it would save time. But yesterday it seemed I couldn't play this one through the whole way at all, even in my usual shite manner, so the whole thing just devolved into much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Got there in the end but by the time it was finished this little off-the-cuff number that I hoped to get down real fast had ended up being laboured and much hated. Don't think the song-writing is up to scratch, though I am quite fond of the lyrics. Anyway, I will hopefully feel different about it after the irritation of the recording process has faded. I usually do.

Harry Clarke at the National Gallery

I have been a massive Harry Clarke fan ever since a tiny thumbnail of one of his illustrations appeared in our art textbook in secondary school. He is an Irish artist, known both for his stained glass work and his book illustrations. Was thrilled to hear about the exhibition currently running at the National Gallery of his Illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's 'Fairy Tales' (also features black and white illustrations from 'The Rape of the Lock'), which I finally got into see today, despite being quite hungover. Below are three of the images included in the exhibition but they really don't do justice to the delicate, intricate pen-work & luminous colour of the originals. The giftshop was an absolute dream/nightmare as there were loads of prints/postcards/books of Clarke's work, which are normally very difficult to find, so naturally I wanted to buy pretty much everything. In the end I settled for a re-production (very beautifully done) of Edgar Allen Poe's 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' that Clarke had illustrated and the hardback programme to accompany the exhibtion which included nice glossy prints of all the stuff from the exhibition (except the black and white illustrations), and a few postcards aswell.

The exhibition is continuing til 20 September, I absolutely recommend checking it out.

Anyway, it's kind of a pity for my fragile ego as this song, for whatever reason, had way more listens and downloads then any of the other stuff I've put up & now it's back to zero cause I moved it...but at least it is compartmentalised the way I like...

Anyway, now that this is done I'm gonna work on getting down to some twisted-beaty-synthery for the rest of the weekend.

I'm a big fan of the Soundcloud service. Their player is aesthetically pleasing (with the waveform view & ability to comment on the waveform being a stroke of genius), tunes stream really well, easy access to downloads, nice overview of statistics & a useful element of social networking that gets you listening to all sorts of interesting things if you have a bit of a look around. The fact that Soundcloud doesn't place limitations on lengths of tracks means that alot of producers put up full livesets and mixes, which is a great way of finding new music. At the moment my big interest is in the many variants and hybrids that relate to dubstep and there is wealth of artists on Soundcloud who are at the cutting edge of this type of music. New blog & general update

I have a problem. I keep setting up blogs! And look at the state of euphiophone.com, sure it's fierce neglected. Anyway, I set up a blog for my Dad at www.neliusflynn.com to showcase/publicise his art. He's gonna be maintaining it himself from now on so expect to see regular updates on work that he is doing, a large selection of his paintings/drawings/wood burnings/sculptures/other specialist projects, as well as information about his commissioning service etc. It's in its infancy right now but there are some lovely examples of his gouche work uploaded that I am a big fan of.

Apart from that, I have been working away on designing a Junior Cert History book (nearly finished) and then spending my evenings trying to figure out how my Mopho synth communicates with Logic 8 using all the Environment window MIDI routing shananigans. Am dying to get making some bowel-shaking-monster-bass-heavy tunes, just have to get the bleedin' thing working first...

Am also plotting one or two regular features for my blog, such as a bi-weekly solo acoustic upload. This would let me get all my old tunes out in the open and hopefully force me to:

write some new songs
get some collaborations on the go in order to get the tunes a bit finished
get some of the songs that I have written over the last ten years (that I still think are any use) recorded so I can either say, 'what was I thinking, this is just as rubbish as that other one that I wrote about being an angsty teen', or if I still don't hate a song I can move on with it and get it to a more finished state.

This is a mellow mix, the likes of which one might play on a Sunday afternoon or late at night. It features songs interspersed with instrumentals (lots of mallet and melodic percussion stuff). There is acoustic material from the likes of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith, minimalism from Steve Reich and Philip Glass, bands such as Sonic Youth and Xiu Xiu, and instrumental stuff by everyone from Clark and Machinefabriek to Moondog and Max Roach. It's a collection of stuff I really enjoy and consequently it's not just a litany of obscure bands that I think I am oh-so-painfully-cool to know about, there's all sorts of stuff in there. My birthday

One of the highlights of my birthday was getting a card from Melissa featuring her artwork, on the right there. It features Jeremy Irons (Melissa's future pug) wishing me a happy birthday.

Had a very nice day really, had cheesecake in work, went for dinner with Melissa & her mum, Sharon, my housemate Amanda made another cake and I ordered a new synth (the very sexy DSI Mopho, below) funded by my lovely family.

Additional note: to top it all off I also saw Jane from the bus who waved excitedly at me. This made me feel VERY special.

Been very busy the last few days trying to get new blog designed and operational for Second Square To None. Getting serious staring-at-computer-screen-headache as that's all I've done from morning to night all weekend.

However, this is just about done now, if I could ever stop tinkering about with it..

List_1: An ambient album list

Thought I'd compile a few of my favourite ambient albums, focusing on textural, non-beat orientated, electronically conceived work. It's all fairly abstracted stuff, where instruments, field recordings and synthesized elements are melded together through extensive processing using anything from guitar pedals to Max/MSP and reconstituted into tasty new aural treats.

Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet

This is a big time favourite. Hecker manages to create an expansive sense of meloncholy with dense layers of crumbling sonic flotsam and jetsam. There's a great dynamism at work in this album, ebbing and flowing as submerged arpeggios or faint hints of strings or guitars peak out amidst the pleasantly distorted drones in an organic and cohesive work that never fails to be affecting.

Fennesz - Venice

There's a couple of Fennesz albums that I would stick in here, including his most recent 'Black Sea', as he is pretty consistently amazing, but this one was the first of his albums that I got big into and for me it really epitomizes his sound. Big washes of granular noise and haunting melodies that, despite having a distinctly digital aesthetic, always sound lush and warm. Got a chance to see him live recently at Andrew's Lane and would highly recommend checking him out.

Kreng - L'Autopsie Phénoménale De Dieu

Got this in the post two weeks ago on very attractive green vinyl. The vinyl is apparently limited to only 400 copies, and as soon as I see that word 'limited' my vision dims and I go into a bit of weird hazy frenzy and when I snap out of it I've bought a bunch of stuff. Fortunately, in this case it proved to be a happy circumstance as this is a great piece of work, with a haunting reappropriation of fuzzy old samples that take in Bernard Hermann-esque strings, battered gamelan recordings, disjointed jazz and shimmering piano melodies, all cloaked in layers of delicious murk.

Lawrence English - Kiri No Oto

Apparently the title is Japanese for sound of fog. That pretty much sums up the album, lovely soft textures that wrap around your ears like an ear blanket. The guy is pretty much as gifted at coming up with appropriate names for music as he is at making it, check out 'Organs Lost At Sea' to see what I'm on about.

Oren Ambarchi - Grapes From The Estate

This one is alot less dense in texture then any of the above records. Ambarchi uses heavily filtered and processed guitar to create clear, pure tones that he layers into subtle melodic movements that are then augmented with minimal touches of organ, piano and slight percussion.

William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops

Any half decent list of ambient works has gotta have a bit of Basinski in there and what better to include then his seminal opus 'The Disintegration Loops'. He created this work by recording the sound of his old archive tapes as he played them on loop and they gradually decayed, eroding and obscuring the recorded sounds to create a hypnotically profound and beautiful piece of work.

Obviously, this list only claims to be a list of personal favourites and is in no way definitive. Would be curious to hear what other people would have at the top of their list..

A little banner thing

Just threw this little banner together for the Film Knight Vimeo page. Film Knight is a little gathering of a couple film nerds where we get out the HD projector and screen something interesting, but with the added bonus that all attendees shoot/animate and edit their own little short which we screen before the feature.

However, using a Playstation 3 as the disc player means that the temptation to spend most of the night visiting wanton destruction on unsuspecting New Yorkers from a helicopter in beautiful high resolution is ever present. Actually, at the last Film Knight we invented a game much more interesting then any of the 'designated missions' whereby you would fly the helicopter as high as possible and then jump out in an attempt to land in a pond in Central Park. Not as easy as it sounds (or does it sound easy?).

State of the Euphionation

Currently: working as a layout designer for print, enriching the lives of school children everywhere by designing books for them. Kind of started the whole design lark as it seemed a more realistic way to get a job then making music for a (very) limited audience but am definitely starting to see it as an area that I would like to stay in and hope to develop my skills.

I also make music, both acoustic and electronic, as Euphiophone. I am involved with Second Square To None, a Dublin based group who put on audiovisual events showcasing the work of electronic music/noise makers that falls outside the realms of the dancefloor orientated set. I have scored a few short films aswell, but not lately. Some examples of my music are in the Soundcloud player on this blog. You can also download them for free if you want a little Euphiophone on the go.

I have a strong interest in animation and motion graphics aswell, having done some bits and pieces in Maya/After Effects/Flash. This is something I would like to explore in greater depth and incorporate into my portfolio of design skills. Some examples of my video work are on the video panel of this blog.

Hoping to record about twenty and then pick the best few & polish them off for an EP. Will be putting a new one up about every two weeks, usually on a Saturday. They are well rough but the idea is just to get them recorded & out there, so am not worrying about the details for now.
